An iconic challenge that takes in some the most spectacular views in our region, this year marks the 32nd Annual Across Mersey Swim.
First recorded as part of the Liverpool Olympic Festival in 1863, this historic swim was revived in 1994 by Robin Baynes MBE, Jimmy Insley, and Bob Jones. Since then, it has flourished, gaining popularity with an increasing number of participants year on year and a dedicated team of volunteers and supporters—whose invaluable contributions make the event possible.
The Across Mersey Swim could not take place without the coordinated efforts of multiple organisations working together. From safety teams ensuring swimmer protection, to event organisers managing logistics, and local authorities providing support, every group plays a vital role. Without this collaboration—spanning planning, permissions, safety measures, and on-the-day execution—the event simply cannot take place. This joint effort highlights the power of teamwork in bringing such a historic and challenging swim to life.
For 2025, we aim to attract record participation and elevate the Across Mersey Swim to the pinnacle of open-water swimming events in the calendar.
Starting at High Water from the Cockle Inlet in Liverpool and finishing at Monks Ferry, Alabama Way in Birkenhead, the swim is followed by a medal presentation to the safety cover and crews, and a medal presentation to all swimmers.
And then, of course, comes the after party in Glen Afric Tap Room, Birkenhead, where we will, in the words of Liverpool Heartbeat, “celebrate courage, resilience, and the power of giving back to those in need.”
